Lesson 1.1 – Why Don’t Children Listen?

MASTERING EMPATHY SKILLS

CHAPTER 1 • LESSON 1.1

Why Don’t Children Listen?

Learning Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will begin to recognize that children’s difficult behavior is not always simple defiance. You will learn to look beneath the behavior and ask what emotion the child may be communicating.

Key Concepts

Behavior Can Be Emotional Communication

Children do not always have the language or self-awareness to explain what they are experiencing. Sometimes they communicate emotion through their behavior.

Different Emotions Can Produce Different Behaviors

Anxiety may appear as avoidance. Anger may appear as resistance. Hurt may appear as irritability. A growing need for independence may look like defiance.

Change the Question

Instead of asking:
“Why won’t my child listen?”

Try asking:
“What might my child be feeling right now?”

Understanding Before Controlling

Empathy does not mean abandoning rules, limits, or parental responsibility. It means trying to understand the child’s emotional experience before deciding how to respond.

Reflection

Take a moment to connect this lesson with your own experience. You do not need to find a perfect answer. The goal is to begin looking beneath behavior.

1. Think of a recent time when your child did not listen. What behavior did you see?

2. What emotion might have been underneath that behavior?

3. What was your immediate response—correction, frustration, explanation, punishment, withdrawal, or curiosity?

4. How might the interaction have changed if you had first asked:

“What might my child be feeling right now?”

TRY THIS BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

During one interaction with your child, notice the moment you feel an urge to immediately correct, explain, or stop the behavior.

Before responding, silently ask yourself:

“What might my child be feeling right now?”

You do not need to change your response yet. For now, simply practice noticing.

TAKE THIS WITH YOU

Children’s behavior is often emotional expression. Before trying to control the behavior, try understanding the feeling first.
