Mastering Empathy Skills

Stop Trying to Fix Your Child—Start Transforming the Relationship

This course introduces a practical way of understanding children’s behavior through empathy. Instead of focusing only on what a child is doing, you will learn to recognize the emotions, developmental needs, and relationship dynamics that may be operating underneath the behavior.

Through short video lessons, key concepts, and reflection exercises, you will begin developing empathy as a skill—not simply as a feeling.

What You Will Learn

Many parent-child conflicts begin with behavior: refusing, arguing, withdrawing, crying, or suddenly exploding. The natural response is often to correct the behavior.

This course teaches another starting point: understanding the emotional experience underneath the behavior.

You will learn to recognize emotional signals earlier, distinguish behavior from the feelings underneath it, and respond in ways that preserve appropriate boundaries while increasing understanding and connection.

SEE BENEATH BEHAVIOR

Recognize when difficult behavior may be communicating fear, anger, hurt, anxiety, or developmental needs.

RECOGNIZE EMOTION EARLIER

Learn to notice emotional signals before accumulated frustration becomes an explosion.

RESPOND WITH EMPATHY

Practice responding to the child’s emotional experience before immediately trying to correct or control the behavior.

Your Lessons

Begin with Lesson 1.1 and continue through the lessons in order. Each lesson combines a short video with key concepts and reflection questions.

LESSON 1.1

Why Don't Children Listen?

What looks like stubbornness or defiance may actually be emotional communication. Learn to look beneath behavior and begin asking a different question: “What might my child be feeling right now?”

LESSON 1.2

Why Do Children's Emotions Suddenly Explode?

Emotional explosions often have a history. Learn how frustration, hurt, pressure, anxiety, and feeling misunderstood can accumulate—and why recognizing emotional signals earlier matters.

How the Course Works

1. WATCH

Watch the short PsychoEdu video lesson.

2. UNDERSTAND

Review the key concepts that explain what is happening psychologically and developmentally.

3. REFLECT

Apply the ideas to your own parenting relationships through guided reflection questions.

A DIFFERENT QUESTION

Instead of asking only,
“How do I stop this behavior?”

begin asking,
“What is happening emotionally in this relationship?”

Empathy does not mean giving up boundaries.

It means understanding the emotional experience before deciding how to respond.
